Adaptation to climate change: From resilience to transformation
There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. From resilience to transformation" I wish I had read this book before any other related material. Mark Pelling is an expert on the Disaster Risk Reduction and the Climate Change Adaptation fields and he definitely does not hold back in this book. It is a "must read" for everyone in the development field and for anyone searching for clear, unbiased, well- balanced, and a fact-based comprehensive analysis of the social dimensions to climate change adaptation.
Instead of reading the often too technical IPCC Assessment Reports, this book provides the reader with an explanation on the importance of adaptation to climate change while going into detail into the resilience- transition- transformation framework to adaptation.
The case studies throughout the book from Hurricane Mitch to our own Hurricane Katrina do a great job supporting the evidence provided by the author and give specific examples on the importance of countries both developed and developing, adapting to the immediate effects of climate change. Pelling's "Adaptation to Climate Change" is not a painful collection of data aiming to frighten everyone about the effects of climate change we have enough of those type of materials , but an easy-to-read book aimed to inform the reader about the importance of it, while explaining actions that can be taken at the local level to adapt to the effects of climate change.
From Resilience to Transformation
It will definitely be a global reference in the climate change adaptation field. The book offers new insights to the issue of climate change adaptation.
It is the first book, as the author notes, to touch upon the social dimension of climate change adaptation with due consideration of institution and institutionalism. There are lots of interesting contents that you would not find from other technology- and economics based accounts for the issue. This book is a must-read, particularly for lay people as well as researchers who want to get sense of what we need to do to understand the needs as well as the measures forward. I have found the book extremely useful for my own research.

In this way understanding adaptive capacity and action requires a lens that can examine organisational behaviour and governance regimes, as well as the feelings, values and actions of individuals. The book highlights that technical understanding of climate change adaptation is becoming accompanied by a more nuanced view that can include governance as a field of adaptation, as well as a context within which technical adaptations unfold, and so the relationship between humanity and climate change is shifting.

We turn from adapting to climate change, towards adapting with climate change. The reader is reminded of the challenges ahead for a progressive adaptation. The book argues that, not only are external structures likely to resist change, but those at risk themselves are apt to choose to support and adapt to the status quo for lack of access to the tools and opportunities to develop and apply critical awareness.
