Right" in the hopes of maybe finding something a little more important in a relationship than losing your virginity. Anyone who's just caught on to the recent manga boom of the past few years may be a little put off by the artwork in Shonan Junai Gumi. It's sketchy, chaotic and reminiscent of really older works that came out decades earlier. At times they almost look like scribbles, but that's a major part of the style. Nearly every trapping of the manga "look" is contained here, including superdeformed faces, doe-eyed women and those crazy speed lines we love so much.
Manga purists will find this book an unlikely crown jewel in their collection, along side Shirow's Appleseed and Otomo's Akira.
The Early Years: Volume 1
It's a great study in how much manga has changed in a relatively small time, as well as a tribute to the roots from which this book draws heavily. That "M" label is on the book for a reason, and hopefully you'll find it on the bookshelf wrapped in plastic. I have a hard time seeing this book finding a large female audience, unless of course they're into dick jokes with pictures , horny men treating women as sex objects, and women being portrayed as wanting nothing more than to "please their man".
It's not to say that the women in Shonan Junai Gumi are all portrayed as idiots. That's really why Eikichi and Ryuji are there.
At the same time the girls they're hunting aren't going to strike any blows for women's lib any time soon. Particularly disturbing is a chapter that does a take on "AIDS Mary" - an urban myth about a woman with a disease who sleeps with men to infect them, as revenge for catching the disease herself. One such woman sets her sights on Eikichi, and while the humor is there, it's an uneasy sort of humor. I'll say it again, that "M" is there for a reason.
Tohru Fujisawa Art by: Tokyopop upped the price on this collection a few bucks, but it's got almost double the pages of a traditional release.
