Jules Verne - Wikipedia
I loved Megan Vernon The Only Exception, it was funny, sweet and adorable, but her second book, is even better! It's stunning story, that I'll definitely be rereading soon. This unputdownable read left me breathless and extremely satisfied. I really adored characters, which were perfected to almost every detail, and the fact that The Only One is not only a sweet romance but also touches another deep topic, that ever girl should be aware of, makes it even better.
Melanie is perfect student and dau I loved Megan Vernon The Only Exception, it was funny, sweet and adorable, but her second book, is even better! Melanie is perfect student and daughter. Living in the buble she made for herself, Mel feels patethic.

Every romance junkie should adore this fabulous read that melts hearts and John Boy makes it impossible not to laugh or swoon. The scenes between John Boy and Melanie are perfectly written, and are absolutely amazing blend of the best sides of relationship, they made my heart swell. It was fantastic to see this side of him, so different and extremely out of jock stereotype. This book is a nice entertainment for lonely night and everything a girl could dream of.
Megan Vernon has done a good job, and I'll be looking forward to read her next novel. View all 11 comments. Jul 02, Brenda Rothert rated it it was amazing. The Only One will keep you up at night. Melanie is a character you root for from the very beginning. She's been overlooked, and is surprised when a sweet piece of man candy in a loincloth notices her.
John and Mel's story is steamy, emotional and so real. This book is unique, as the story takes John and Melanie in a direction I've never read in New Adult. I highly recommend it as a fresh, engaging NA read. Jul 12, Christina rated it it was amazing. I think readers will swoon over John Boy— he's an alpha male with a heart of gold.
His protectiveness mixed with his unbridled passion for the heroine left me fanning myself page after page. I was really excited about this book because the two characters, Melanie and John Boy were featured briefly in The Only Exception and both caught my attention. I loved getting to know what made these two tick. Melanie is a spitfire hardass and gives John Boy hell from the get go but John being so easy going, flirtatious and sexy doesn't take no for an answer.
For me it was a little difficult to like Melanie in this book at first. She was really harsh to John even though his reputation was that of a womanizer she didn't let him get close no matter how hard she tried. To her defense though she's had a rough childhood and is having to support herself through college so it's easy to see why she's a no bullshit woman.

This was a character that had many layers and watching them peel away little by little was incredibly painful and cathartic. She's dealing with so much already and when she gets a call that changes her life I finally got to see the vulnerable Melanie that I was hoping was under that rough exterior. It was amazing to watch her go from strong young woman to scared and nearly broken.
I didn't really fall in love with her until she had to lean on John for comfort during the hardest thing she's had to face. That in and of itself was difficult for her because she had some past issues with an ex that have left their mark on her physically and emotionally. A John Boy was in a word I was in love with this guy from the second he came on the scene at a frat party wearing nothing but a lion cloth and a shit eating grin.
He has a pretty well known rep for being a dog so to speak. He's had his fair share of girls and that is the main reason why Melanie tries to avoid him. John wasn't giving up without a fight and I loved watching how determined he was to be there for Melanie. His character was another fantastic guy Vernon gives us.

He was sweet, romantic, strong and caring even though most people write him off as a frat boy player. He wasn't always perfect and made some stupid mistakes but he always proved that he was in fact a good guy. He's got a deeper side to himself that he has only showed Melanie and the relationship that develops between them was a nice distraction to the real issue at hand. It all comes back to Melanie's mystery phone call that throws her life into chaos.
John ends up standing by Melanie's side throughout a difficult decision she has to make. Watching him sit in the Doctor's office with her was charming and sweet. Although my heart will forever belong to Trey Chapman The Only Exception John has squeezed a space in my full heart and became another book guy I couldn't imagine not getting to know. He was just fantastic! By now it's become obvious that I have a severe heart on for The Only Exception. Trey and Monica, the main character's in that story make an appearance in this book and that really made me happy. I love companion novels because I get to see more from characters I loved!
The friendship between Monica and Melanie was even stronger in this book after what the two had been through and helped each other out with. I love best friends who remain close even when they both have such intense issues they have faced or are facing. Aside from my gushing affection for Trey and Monica, the addition of Melanie's sister Valerie was another bonus. Valerie was a flirty, outgoing goofball that stole the show whenever she was in a scene.
I totally enjoyed how she was the voice of reason for Melanie when she got too serious. She helped her see things a little clearer and provided another form of comfort and support. The Only One was another winner from Vernon that made me laugh, swoon and drool! Her guys are always sexy and sweet and her women are a great mix of tough and strong yet vulnerable. I can't wait to see if she writes another companion, because I would definitely love to see more of Valerie in the future!
I think she could have potential. Even though this one took me on an intense ride never knowing what would happen with this couple I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. The epilogue delivered a final blow to the romantic in me being told from John's pov. I love when an author closes out a story with the other characters thoughts after telling the story from one side. It was nice to see what John was feeling. This book was exactly what I wanted from a companion and delivered everything I come to look forward to in a sexy New Adult novel. These are two companion books I absolutely recommend you start reading asap!
Oct 10, Anna Banana rated it really liked it. Initially the reason I wanted to read this book was because of the cover. I'd heard about this authors works and I'd been meaning to read The Only Exception for a while now but it was never something that I felt compelled to pick up. But then I saw this book. And then I read what is was about and just had to read it. But even though this book is a companion novel to The Only Exception and it's not necessary to read the first book, I had to.
It's something I'm weird about and I can never start an Initially the reason I wanted to read this book was because of the cover. It's something I'm weird about and I can never start any kind of series out of order. But to get to the point: I didn't really like The Only Exception.
And that made me a bit nervous to read this one because I really wanted to like it. But I put my big girl pants on and started reading and To be honest, I'd never really paid much attention to Melanie in the previous book so I didn't really know much about her or what to expect. Until lately, Melanie had her life put together.
She worked hard, studied even harder and hardly had time for anything else which seems to be perfectly fine with her. But I think it's because she doesn't have much of a social life that it puts her to a bit of a disadvantage. She's naive; at times she reminded me of a middle school student, especially when she first kissed John. She's constantly over thinking everything, always nervous and can never seem to just relax. Some would call her uptight. But she has her reasons. I really, really liked Melanie's character. For some reason I just felt so connected to her and a bit protective; probably because of how innocent she seems.
Honestly, my first impression of John "John Boy"Walden was that he was a frat boy douche bag. It was so hard for me to not judge him because for the most part, you never really get a clear image of who he is. At least for me. I liked the little glimpses of a more deeper person but then he'd go right back to sexual innuendos and sexual banter.
Don't get me wrong: I'm all for sexual banter but I have to feel like the hero isn't just using her as some sort of game. Eventually as the story goes on you can clearly see he has feelings over her and I loved how protective of her he became but a part of me was weary of him till the end. There were times when I honestly disliked him and it seemed like no matter what he did I just wouldn't give him a break. But I think it's because Melanie is such a great girl and deserves a guy who's going to treat her well; and I guess a part of me was worried John couldn't be that for her.
This book wasn't really angsty but for some reason it had drove me crazy. My one complaint about this book is that I wish we got more details. There were all these hints of there being this messed up past but you never get to know anything about him outside of college. Overall I'm really happy I finally gave this author a chance and I look forward to reading more from her. This is one of the most beautiful and emotional books I've ever read!
The characters were so real and the plot unexpected! I fell completely in love with everything about it! I can guarantee that this book is definitely going to stick with me for a while! I didn't see the plot of this book coming at all which made me love it that little bit more! I love that the synopsis doesn't give you any clue about "Relationships are tough, but if they're real, then they're worth fighting for.
I love that the synopsis doesn't give you any clue about it, so that when you do start to read the story it does take you completely by surprise! The plot was so inspiring and so beautiful even though it did deal with such an emotional subject! I loved that the author made some bits of the subject really serious, but then made some bits quite sarcastic or in a bit of a jokey manner in a sense!
To me, it showed that the main character was able to make light of a situation that would break others! The main character did sort of break, but by making a joke or being sarcastic it lightened her spirits and made her less afraid in a weird way! The plot just completely blow me away and it was written amazingly!
The characters were also amazing! The main character was Melanie and I knew who she was as she makes appearances in the companion book to this one, The Only Exception, but this book was her book and was told from her point of view! She was such a real character and I connected brilliantly with her! My heart went out to Melanie in this book! She goes through something that I can only imagine going through and she has a hard time coming to terms with it!
She loses her confidence and she thinks that she's broken when in fact she's an amazingly strong person! I connected brilliantly with Melanie because she was such a normal person and she went through something really hard, but was amazingly strong throughout it!
John was the love interest of Melanie and he was so hot! I loved how supportive he was of Melanie and that he wouldn't take no for an answer from her! I would have loved to have read some more of this book from John's point of view as he was such an interesting character and it would have been interesting to see how he was handling what Melanie went through! I loved that Monica and Trey were back in this book! I loved them in their book, so I was really happy that they were in this book as well!
I'm pretty sad that this book will probably be the last book in this series and that there won't be anymore companion books, but too be honest I'm so happy that the author decided to give Melanie a book to start with! I LOVE the cover for this book! It is so hot and it sort of reminds me of a particular scene in the book! Aug 27, Jamie marked it as to-read. LOVE the sound of this one!!!
View all 6 comments. Sep 27, Angelina rated it really liked it Shelves: Sweet, Sexy and Great story. Jun 26, Amy Logg rated it it was amazing Shelves: This story is one hell of an emotional and moving read. Witty characters and sexual innuendos a plenty!
But there is also a very serious and powerfully story being told here. I don't want to give away what the 'reveal' is because I think that was such an intensely emotional moment that you need to feel for yourself. I didn't see it coming at all and I was in as much shock as the characters where when they found out.
It's at this point that we get to really know the characters. The way John Boy supported Melanie was beautiful, and together they find there own way of dealing with the situation. But after John sees Melanie in a moment of vulnerability, he starts to want more from their relationship. He wants to be a better person and be there to support her.
He is the epitome of hotness and every girl of campus wants a piece of him I can't blame them! He's confident, knows how to have fun and is devilishly flirty. But that's not all there is to him, he might have the body of an pro athlete, but under that sexy loincloth clad body there is a smart, sweet and caring guy, that melted my heart.
She wants to loosen up but seems scared to. That is until John Boy shows her how be happy with who she really is. We also get introduced to Melanie's family, most notably her sister Valerie, who was a fun and vibrant character. I love an opposites attract romance, which essentially this is. My favourite similarity would have to be their shared love of Harry Potter! The connection between these two is very sweet, as it grows from friendship to something more.
And while they are hit with some heavy news early on, I felt that only made their relationship stronger. John's there for her when she needs him most. When she needs a shoulder to cry on, literally, he offers his up in a heartbeat. Even when she tries to give him an out, he doesn't take it, which just won me over a little bit more. These two also share some oh so steamy moments too, with the infamously epic love scene!! And the scene on the dance floor, I mean seriously hot, phew!!!!!
I absolutely love Magan's humorous writing style, with some of John's innuendoes making me giggle like a teenage girl! But somehow she still manages to weave powerful issues throughout the story. She doesn't shy away from the truth, with some of the scenes being quite confronting and a little overwhelming - and this made me feel like I was going through everything with them, like this was happening to a friend. The pacing was also very effective, with all the small pieces of the story coming together for a beautiful ending. And…there is a epilogue, hooray!!!
I hate when stories end abruptly, especially if they're isn't a sequel. This is one of those books that I kept thinking about after I finished reading it. The entire book is a roller coaster of emotions and is a must read for any NA romance fans! I can't wait to read Melanie's sister Valerie's story next! May 25, Melissa rated it really liked it Shelves: To take away the pain.
I've never felt like this before and whatever we have, I don't want to lose it" - John Boy I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. After reading The Only Exception , I was more than excited when Magan Vernon announced that a sequel was in the works. Then I heard John Boy was the main character I mean come on Yup, I've l "I want to be your knight in shining armor.
Yup, I've learned my lesson. Never judge a person by their outward appearance. Never, ever, ever, judge a fictional character by their outward appearance Not even a minute into the book, Melanie crashes into John Boy, wearing a loincloth As you can imagine, sparks and a little bit of lust fly, and though Monica warns Melanie off, she and John can't resist one another. Just as things heat up, Melanie receives news that has the potential to throw a permanent wrench in the burgeoning relationship.
I like Magan Vernon as an author; her writing has a good flow and she really has a knack for creating characters that feel real; who go through both highs and lows. Her depiction of college life is really spot on, and that's coming from a college student herself. Tallahassee FLA B.
