I found The World of the New Testament to be one of the most helpful resources that I have ever interacted with on New Testament backgrounds—both in the breadth and scope of the articles and the overall layout of the book. In regards to the former, I really enjoyed the vast array of topics this book discusses.

Each article was well written, well documented, and authoritatively addressed. In regards to the latter, the overall layout of the book, I found the chronological arrangement of the material well-structured and thoughtfully executed. I also enjoyed the various photographs, maps, tables and diagrams. At some points, the photographs are difficult to discern due the lack of color, but this is to be expected with a black and white image.

Lastly, each article concludes with an annotated bibliography that is certain to point the curious reader in the right direction I followed a few rabbit trails, I mean research trails myself.

If none of that describes you, and you are simply interested in the world behind the pages of the New Testament you will still benefit greatly from this volume. I don't want to say some might be overwhelmed by the amount of information they pack into this book, but you will feel brain-packed if you can finished this cover to cover. Spanning the time of the exile all the way beyond the Israelite borders to other cultures, you will get a decent sense of what the world was like in the ancient east.

    The scholarship is robust, recent, and understandable. I wholeheartedly desire that the 'consumption' of this publication will be as high as its demand, and that, as a result, churches and small groups scattered across the English-speaking world will encounter Jesus of Nazareth with greater intelligence. This book is a welcome resource for anyone who wants to learn more about the world in which the New Testament was written.

    Professors who assign particular articles relevant to the lesson will help keep the lecture up-to-date for their students. Green and McDonald have presented their material in a readable, modern format. Pastors and students alike will benefit from reading this systematic introduction to New Testament backgrounds.

    The fifth section alone would be an enormous help to new students to become acquainted with the geography and history of various regions prominent in the New Testament. The fourth section will help students to better understand how to read the New Testament as first-century literary products.

    I would highly recommend the use of this book personally or in the classroom. Green and McDonald's anthology represents what evangelicals are currently researching and writing about regarding the extensive context of the New Testament. Coming in at over pages, it covers the cultural, social, and historical context of the New Testament.

    Chapters are written by a battery of scholars and historians. The book covers geography, the literary context, the Jewish people in the Roman Hellenistic context, and more. I found it to be well written, understandable, and insightful. No one can tell you the story about your destination better than a person who has lived there.
