It is clear now that IEGs are much more than simple activation markers and they deserve to be analyzed as possible key participants in psychiatric conditions. Genetic manipulations that allow the temporal and spatial control of expression of these genes are powerful tools to analyze the role that IEGs have in memory and other cognitive domains in psychiatric animal models.
We consider that, until now, the intersection between psychiatric models, cognition and IEG function did not receive the attention that it deserves.
